Japanese Tea Ritual

Illustration & Animation

A composition with a tetsubin. A tetsubin is a traditional Japanese cast iron kettle used since the Sixteenth Century.
A Tetsubin is meant for boiling water only. Once the water is hot, smaller ceramic teapot are used to brew the tea.

Using water from a tetsubin to brew tea will change its taste, especially the intensity of the after taste of the tea, which becomes very mellow and sweet. This is due to the iron content of the kettle.
